Biography

Alexander Heather is a graduate double bass student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, studying with Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer. In 2023 he placed 3rd in the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition.

Alexander is a soloist and ensemble player with the Swiss-based LGT Young Soloists, described by Fanfare Magazine as “clearly one of the finest youth orchestras in Europe”. With the Young Soloists he has performed around the world at venues including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and Victoria Hall in Singapore. He took part in their newly released album “Schubert & Airat Ichmouratov” under the Naxos label.

He has been a participant in a wide-range of summer festivals, most recently at the Wabass Institute in Indiana (under the direction of Hal Robinson and Ranaan Meyer), the Heifetz Institute in Virgina (Sam Suggs), Domaine Forget de Charlevoix in Quebec, Canada (Paul Ellison and Francois Rabbath), and Aspen Summer Music Festival (Edgar Meyer).

Alexander was born in Mount Kisco, New York, began playing the double bass at age nine and took his early instruction at the Westchester Music Conservatory and the Juilliard School. In 2014 he moved with his family to Somerset, England to attend Wells Cathedral School as a Specialist Musician (2014-19) where he studied under David Heyes. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (2017-19) and won multiple solo competitions and awards. Alexander began his undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later the Royal College of Music under Caroline Emery, where he completed his Bachelor of Music (Hons) in 2023.
